Big Bands '87 is a medley of songs from popular big bands of previous years. Songs in this medley include: 1. Let's Dance was written by Gregory Stone and Joseph Bonine and adapted from the piece Invitation to the Dance by Carl Maria von Weber. It was the theme music to Benny Goodman's radio program in the thirties.; 2. Ciribiribin was composed by Alberto Pestalozza and Carlo Tiochet in 1898. It became a favorite of Henry James in the thirties and forties.; 3. Moonlight Serenade was composed by Glenn Miller and Mitchell Parish and was immediately popular in the late thirties.; 4. Begin the Beguine was written by Cole Porter and used in Jubilee, a Broadway musical. Artie Shaw performed it in the thirties.; 5. Woodchoppers Ball was composed by Joe Bishop and Woody Herman. It was Woody Herman's biggest hit in the late thirties.; 6. Leap Frog was written by Joe Garland and Leo Corday. Les Brown and his band performed in in the forties and his band continued to perform for sixty years.; 7. Gettin Sentimental or I'm Getting Sentimental Over You was written by Ned Washington and George Bassman. It was recorded by Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra.; 8. A Train or Take the A Train was written by Billy Strayhorn, Lee Gaines, and Joya Sherrill and performed by Duke Ellington.; 9. April in Paris was written by Vernon Duke and Yip Harburg for the Broadway musical Walk a Little Faster. Count Basie and his orchestra released the song in the fifties. Ken McCoy arranged this medley in 1987 for the US Army Field Band under Lieutenant William E. Clark, 1979-1991. Ken McCoy graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, Ohio. After earning his degree in music education, he taught instrumental music for four years in public schools. In 1977, he accepted a position with the United States Field Band as a staff arranger and eventually was promoted to Chief Arranger. McCoy's arrangements and compositions have been performed in all 50 US states and several foreign countries. In 1995, he joined the Ohio State University Marching Band Staff and arranged at least one full half time show per year for the band culminating with his 23rd show in 2017. Ken McCoy passed away January 11, 2018. |
