Silent Night (Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) was written by Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr in 1818. John Freeman Young translated three of the six original verses into English in 1859. Ken McCoy arranged the traditional Silent Night melody in 2003 for the Ohio State University Marching Band Christmas Project. Ken McCoy graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, Ohio. After earning his degree in music education, he taught instrumental music for four years in public schools. In 1977, he accepted a position with the United States Field Band as a staff arranger and eventually was promoted to Chief Arranger. McCoy's arrangements and compositions have been performed in all 50 US states and several foreign countries. In 1995, he joined the Ohio State University Marching Band Staff and arranged at least one full half time show per year for the band culminating with his 23rd show in 2017. Ken McCoy passed away January 11, 2018. |
